The result is a detailed written report, a prioritized action plan organized by your child’s developmental stage, and guidance on what to plan for next.
Founder Jen brings 30 years of experience in occupational therapy, along with CAPS, SHSS, and CLIPP certifications. SafelySituated is a non-medical consulting service and does not provide occupational therapy.
We assess your home as a living system, informed by Universal Design principles, to look for where small changes can make the biggest difference in safety, confidence, and daily comfort. We look at how your family moves through it, how light supports or challenges your child throughout the day, and where everyday friction points add up over time. It’s about understanding how every part of the home works together for the people who live there.

We look at circulation paths, doorway widths, and traffic patterns — noting where your home supports your family’s movement safely and where small hazards quietly accumulate.

Light affects safety in ways most people never notice until something goes wrong. We assess lighting throughout every room — including the subtle transition points that matter most for young children.
How your home is organized.
From cabinet locks to storage heights, the small decisions about where things live and how spaces are arranged can have an outsized impact on how your child explores and on daily family life.

We look for opportunities today that help your home keep pace as your child grows — so your space supports your family rather than limiting it.

Step 3 — Follow-Up Call
We review your Roadmap together, answer your questions, and help you decide what to tackle now and what to revisit as your child grows, so you can plan ahead for each new milestone.
We sell no products and accept no referral fees or commissions, so every recommendation is independent. Your Roadmap focuses on the types of changes and product categories that fit your home, not specific brands or contractors, so you remain free to choose the providers and solutions that are right for you.

Ideally before — mid-pregnancy is a great time, while you still have the energy to make changes and enjoy the peace of mind of a home that’s better prepared. That said, it’s never too late — many parents schedule when baby starts crawling or pulling to stand.

Most in-person assessments take 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on home size. Virtual home reviews typically run 60 to 90 minutes. We’re happy to work around nap times and your family’s rhythm.

No — SafelySituated provides non-medical home safety consulting. Our assessments focus on the physical environment of your home, not your child’s health or development. Always follow your pediatrician’s guidance for health and developmental matters.

No — SafelySituated is a consulting service, not a contractor. We assess your home and provide a prioritized plan, but installation (gates, locks, anchoring furniture, etc.) is done by you or a professional you choose. Many recommendations are simple DIY fixes; for larger projects, we recommend a licensed contractor (in California, verify licenses at cslb.ca.gov).

We provide a resource guide with product categories and general recommendations — for example, cabinet locks, stair gates, or window safety options. We never sell products or accept referral fees, so every recommendation is independent.

Our assessments are visual and non-invasive. We don’t test the strength or anchoring of grab bars, railings, safety gates, or furniture anchors, verify building code compliance, measure floor slip resistance, or test safety systems like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Any recommendation involving structural work, permits, or safety systems should be evaluated and installed by a licensed contractor or qualified professional.

Yes. Virtual home reviews are available worldwide, in any time zone. We guide you through a live video walkthrough, room by room, as you move through your home with your phone or tablet.
Please note: A virtual home review follows the same room-by-room approach but is not a substitute for an in-person assessment. Recommendations are based only on what you show us on screen and the information and measurements you provide. We cannot independently verify the conditions, measurements, or features of the home, and some details, like exact step heights, doorway widths, and floor transitions, can only be measured in person.
Before you book, we’ll go over what is and isn’t included, so you can choose the option that’s right for your home. You’ll receive a personalized Vertical Explorer Roadmap based on your review. All you’ll need is a smartphone or tablet, a good internet connection, and a tape measure. A friend or family member is welcome to join and help if you’d like. Every fee is all-inclusive — there are no surprise charges for multi-story homes or travel within Orange County. The price you see is the price you pay.

Your child’s abilities change quickly — what’s safe at six months may not be safe at sixteen months. The Annual Safety Refresh ($175) is a shorter follow-up visit for returning clients to reassess your home and highlight new potential concerns.
